This ‘City of Firsts” has plenty to offer and with our 48-hours itinerary guide, you can explore everything the city has to offer. This itinerary has a focus on history, art, nature and delish food.  It is certainly an interesting place to explore and is well with a trip, no matter the season.

Day 1 in the “Hoop City”

Breakfast at Route 66 Diner at 9:00am!

Springfield has some incredible food offering! So start your day 1 in Springfield with a fantastic breakfast at Route 66 Diner. Springfield Armory National Historic Site at 10:00am!

A peek into nearly 200 years of American history at the Springfield Armory National Historic Site! This site showcases the story Springfield Armory from its early beginnings to its role in American history and US Armed Forces. It features an array of fascinating displays, activities and collections. It served as a major site for manufacturing the weapons for U.S. military from 1777 until 1968. In 1794, muskets were produced. Today, it has the largest collection of American vintage military weapons in the world, spanning over two centuries, like the Firearms donated by President Roosevelt, Kennedy, Wilson, and Eisenhower; the M-1 rifle of WWII and M-14 rifle. Walk around the museum at the site and browse the wide collections of historic firearms and also learn about technological advancements that had taken place in the Springfield armory.

Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame  at 11:00am!

Next, head over to the Naismith Memorial Basketball of Fame that features the basketball history from where it was born to the legendary players, their careers and beyond. Spanning 80,000 sq ft., this s place brings the history of the sport alive with an array of interactive exhibits, unique artifacts, photographs and other memorabilia. Visitors can take up shooting challenge, test their knowledge of the sport, or play video games at this spot. Look back into the history of the sport and peek into the sparkling careers of the game heroes, coaches and others associated with it.

Connecticut Riverwalk and Bikeway at 12:00pm!

Go for a bike ride or amble along the Connecticut Riverwalk and Bikeway. It is built along the banks of the Connecticut River, which the largest river in New England. It stretches approx 3.7miles and features stunning landscapes and splendid views of the city’s skyline, the Mount Holyoke Range and the Mount Tom Range.  Take a scenic walk or indulge in recreational activities like biking, rollerblading, running, strolling, and bicycling. A perfect place for a serene stroll!

Forest Park at 2:00pm!

With over 730 acres of land, the Forest Park is packed with fun activities for all ages.  A zoo, playgrounds, a rose garden, hiking and walking trails, aquatic gardens, promenades, athletic fields, ponds and lakes, sculptures, historic homes, United States first swimming pool, and an outdoor amphitheatre are the major attractions located at this park. 
You can take a hike through the park and soak in the Springfield’s picturesque beauty,  marvel at the historic buildings and different architectural styles, engage in games like basketball, baseball or tennis at the various courts, and see over 200 exotic and indigenous animals at the Zoo at Forest Park. Get up-close with a variety of animals, including  camels, red kangaroos, wolves, De Brazza’s monkeys, cougars, pythons, lemurs, African bull frog, American alligator, Corn snake, Domestic rooster, and much more. If visiting during warmer months, do not forget to see the magical and stunning light displays “Bright Nights” on a carriage ride.  A perfect park for outdoor recreation!

Shop for apparels, accessories, beauty items, shoes and much more at the Century Shopping Center. It houses several national and regional stores like T.J. Maxx, Rainbow Clothing, Pretty Women, Modell’s, Stop & Shop and Sports Park, to name a few. It has just about anything shoppers need. Shop ‘til you drop!

Springfield Symphony Orchestra at 6:00pm!

After your retail fix, it’s time to get your entertainment fix!

Head to Springfield Symphony Orchestra that feature live shows, concerts and theatre performances at the Symphony Hall.  It plays a variety of programs year-round, including Broadway shows, plays, comedy shows and musicals that enchant the audience. The seating capacity is over 2,600 people. The orchestra is performed from October until April. The beautiful setting, state-of-the-art facilities and the world-class concerts and performances will astonish you!

Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Garden at 10:00am!

Check out your fave Seuss characters at the Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Garden. The garden features sculptures of the famous characters from the books written by Dr. Seuss.  The Cat in the Hat, 10-foot Horton, Yertle the Turtle and Lorax are just a few of the many characters featured here. This garden honors Dr. Seuss’s works and contribution to the city.

Springfield Museums at 12:00pm!

Explore history, science and art at the Springfield Museums! Nestled around a tree-lined quadrangle, the Springfield Museums comprises of four museums- includes George Walter Vincent Smith Art Museum, Springfield Science Museum, Michele & Donald D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts, and Lyman and Merrie Wood Museum of Springfield History. Visitors will be awed by the wealth of beautiful artwork and rich history. 

Springfield Science Museum: The Springfield Science Museum is dedicated to natural science, physical science and anthropology. If traveling with kids, this is a must-visit! Kids can learn about habitats of African savanna, Amazon rainforest, New Coastal areas and a coral reef. It has Seymour Planetarium that houses the oldest star projector in America- Korkosz Star ball where you can see more than 7000 stars. Also, there is a live animal center, a dinosaur hall with life-size dinosaur models indigenous to Connecticut River Valley and Tyrannosaurs Rex replica, and a telegraphone recorder of the 1910s. 

Michele & Donald D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts: The Michele & Donald D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts feature an extensive collection of Dutch Renaissance and Impressionist, along with European, Japanese and American works of art. It includes works by the world’s best sculptors and painters like Harding, Whistler, Monet, Gauguin, Degas, Pissarro, O’ Keeffe, Picasso, Bellows and several other great artists. Highlights include the Currier & Ives lithograph collection, the European art collection, nineteenth and twentieth century Japanese prints, and the American paintings.

George Walter Vincent Smith Art Museum: The George Walter Vincent Smith Art Museum features an impressive collection of artifacts from China, Ancient Rome, Egypt and Greece. It also features Chinese ceramics, artworks, Japanese arms and armor and European sculptures plaster casts. It is definitely worth a visit for art aficionados of all ages!

Lyman and Merrie Wood Museum of Springfield History: Know about the 19th and 20th century Springfield at the Lyman & Merrie Wood Museum of Springfield History. The museum chronicles the story of Springfield from its humble beginnings to its growth during the Industrial Revolution. It also highlights the role of Springfield in American history. Highlights include exhibits like the Automobile Gallery that includes Rolls-Royce roadster of 1925 and 1928, Crestmobile 1901 and Knox 1899; the Abraham Lincoln, the John Brown and the Civil war Exhibit; and the Smith & Wesson Gallery of revolvers and pistols. It also houses a library and archives that has several thousands of documents, books, databases, microfilms and photos highlighting the city’s rich past.

MassMutual Center at 7:00pm!

A visit to Springfield, the birthplace of Basketball is incomplete without catching a game or attending a concert at the MassMutual Center. It is an arena and convention center that hosts many entertainment and sporting events in Springfield and can accommodate 8,000 people. It is home to American Hockey League- Springfield Thunderbirds. Some of the famous concerts hosted here include Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley, Nirvana, Marilyn Manson, Pearl Jam, The Eagles, The Jacksons, Pitbull and many more.  From college and professional sporting events to comedy shows to concert tours, conferences, galas and several other functions are held at the MassMutual Center.
